M

BEFORE WORKING ON M, I knew almost nothing about hunting red grouse. I still don’t, but I learned enough to write about it for the magazine’s “Calendar” section. It was an idea that came into being when, needing to fill pages, Jim Windolf said, “Hey, let’s have a section that features high-profile events from around the world.” So began a frantic dash to curate a list that included a polo match, a regatta, and a keynote address from the man who invented the Cronut—all delivered with a tone that at once took these things seriously but not too seriously. Four days later, it was done.

That was both the challenge and the fun of each issue: Each quarter, the team needed to produce a 100-page book in ten days, and it needed to offer a knowledgeable and lighthearted take on the Slim Aarons lifestyle.

In addition to writing the “Calendar” and “Books” sections, I also edited the “Wine” and “Contributors” sections.
