WHEN 2022 STARTED, I knew three things for sure: I needed a break from start-ups, I needed to write a screenplay, and I needed to avoid starving to death. It was lucky, then, that I connected with Lyndsay Harper at Huckberry. She’s cool. Like, real cool. What was supposed to be a quick screener phone call turned into an hour-and-a-half conversation about our shared appreciation for Whalebone magazine, the importance of conversational writing, and even a little about our families. A few weeks later, I started helping Huckberry clear a backlog of product copy. I wrote the screenplay by day, and at night I pretended to be an expert on Rolexes, fishing gear, Japanese denim, and clogs. So many clogs. The project expanded until I was producing about 4,000 words a week. I’ve never worked with kinder folks than the ones I met at Huckberry—looking at you, Grant Dougharty—but after a few months, I’d finished the screenplay and knew one thing for sure: I could not write another word about clogs.
